Walls Leak More Than You Think
Wall insulation matters less than the attic in Baton Rouge, but a west wall in August can still radiate heat into a room for hours after sunset. Many older homes in the city have walls with little or nothing in them, and outlets, switches and baseboards leak air around the edges. Newer homes usually have batts, sometimes poorly fitted. How we insulate depends on whether the wall is open or finished.
Open walls: remodels, additions, new builds
When the studs are exposed, spray foam is fast and seals around wires, boxes and pipes. Louisiana's code summary lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in climate zone 2. Open-cell foam fills a 2x4 cavity and reaches that; closed-cell gets more per inch and adds stiffness, which some owners want in walls facing the weather. We trim the foam flush so drywall goes on flat.
Finished walls: dense-pack
Most finished walls are insulated by drilling small holes, from inside or outside, and blowing cellulose in at high density so it fills the cavity and does not settle. HomeGuide lists dense-pack at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot. It is usually the more practical retrofit than injecting foam, and it slows air movement as well as heat. Blocking inside the wall, old knob-and-tube wiring and plaster lath all affect the plan, so we check before we quote.
Flood-damaged walls
After the 2016 flood, many homes around Baton Rouge were gutted to a few feet up the wall. If you are rebuilding walls after water, closed-cell foam in the lower part of the wall does not soak up water the way batts do. It will not make a wall floodproof, but it dries out with less to tear out. We talk through options with you before the drywall goes back.
Garages and shared walls
The wall between an attached garage and the house, and the floor of any room above the garage, deserve sealing as well as insulation, since they also keep fumes out. These are common add-ons to an attic or wall job. Get a free estimate

Wall Insulation Questions
Can you spray foam into existing walls?
Some injection foams are made for closed walls, but dense-pack cellulose is usually the simpler, lower-cost retrofit. We tell you which fits your walls after a look.
What R-value do walls need in Baton Rouge?
Louisiana's code summary lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in climate zone 2. The Department of Energy suggests R-13 for an uninsulated wood-frame wall in zone 2, or R-10 of exterior continuous insulation.
Is wall insulation worth it if my attic is done?
If the attic is sealed and insulated and walls are empty, walls are often the next step, especially on west and south walls. Done attic first, though; it usually pays more.
Do you patch the holes after dense-pack?
We plug and fill the holes. Paint matching or siding replacement is listed on the quote if it is part of the job.
