Steel Sweats in This Climate
Metal building and shop insulation solves two problems at once around Baton Rouge: heat and dripping. Bare steel in the sun gets hot enough to make a shop miserable by mid-morning, and when the roof cools at night, humid air inside condenses on the underside and drips onto tools, vehicles and stored feed. Closed-cell spray foam bonded to the steel insulates and puts a vapor-tight layer between the steel and the air.
Why closed-cell on steel
HomeGuide lists closed-cell foam at R-5 to R-7 per inch. It sticks to clean steel, seals seams and fasteners, and does not hold water. That last part matters on a building that may get a roof leak or flood water. Open-cell can work on walls of a building that will be fully conditioned, but on roof steel in a humid climate, closed-cell is the usual pick.
What the building needs first
Steel has to be clean and dry for foam to stick. Oil, rust scale and old faced batts with torn vapor retarder come off first. We look at the roof for leaks at fasteners and skylights, because foam will not fix them. If the building has purlins and girts, we plan how far the foam goes onto them. Doors, vents and any exhaust fans get a look too.
Shops, barns and commercial space
Petrochemical work is the largest local industry, and the region has plenty of steel shops, warehouses and service bays, plus barns on rural lots in Livingston and Ascension. A shop you plan to air condition needs the most insulation; a barn that just needs to stop dripping may need only a thin coat. We size the foam to what you plan to do in the building.
Permits and codes
If a building is being converted to living or office space, code requirements change, and foam inside occupied space may need a thermal barrier. Ask your parish permit office before you start a conversion, and we will tell you what we can and cannot cover. Get a free estimate

Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions
How thick should foam be on a metal building?
Enough to keep the inside face of the foam above the dew point, and more if you plan to air condition it. Often 1 to 3 inches of closed-cell. We write the planned thickness on the quote.
Can you spray over existing insulation?
Not over loose or torn batts. Those come out so the foam bonds to the steel.
Will foam stop my roof from leaking?
No. Foam on the inside is not a roof repair. Leaks should be fixed first.
Do I need to empty the building?
Not always. We cover and mask what stays, but vehicles and anything that cannot be covered should be moved.
