Old Village, New Neighborhoods

Spray Foam Insulation in Zachary spans more than a century of houses. The city was incorporated on August 2, 1889, after Darel Zachary sold his farm to the Illinois Central Railroad, and its historic village holds buildings that survived or followed a 1903 fire, the oldest besides the depot being the 1898 Allison House. At the same time, Zachary grew from 14,960 people in 2010 to 19,316 in 2020, so new subdivisions ring the older core.

Older houses

Old wood-frame homes often have open wall cavities, balloon framing that lets air run from floor to attic, and little floor insulation. Sealing those bypasses at the top and bottom of the walls, then insulating the attic and floor, does more than adding depth alone.

New houses

Newer homes usually need fine-tuning: air sealing around lights and fans, the attic hatch, and kneewalls by bonus rooms. Foam on the roof deck is an option where the ducts and air handler are in the attic.

Balloon framing explained

Many houses built before the 1940s used balloon framing, where wall studs run from the foundation all the way to the roof with no break at the floors. That leaves open channels that carry air from the crawl space straight up into the attic. Adding attic depth without sealing those channels leaves a chimney effect in place. We plug the tops of those wall cavities from the attic with foam or rigid blocking, and close the bottoms from the crawl space where we can reach them. In Zachary's older village blocks, that sealing step often matters more than how many inches of fill go on top.

Higher ground

Zachary sits at about 102 feet, higher and better drained than most of the parish, so crawl spaces here are often less wet. They are still humid, though, and a ground liner is usually the first step. Get a free estimate

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing in Baton Rouge, LA

Zachary Questions

Can you insulate a historic house without damaging it?

Often yes, by working from the attic and crawl space and using dense-pack in walls where needed. We explain what each step involves.

Do new Zachary homes need more insulation?

Usually they need air sealing more than depth. We check both.

Is my crawl space likely dry since Zachary is higher?

Drier than low areas, maybe, but the air is still humid. A liner is usually worth it.

How do I know if my house is balloon framed?

In the attic, look for wall cavities that open straight down with no top plate. We can confirm during the visit.
