The Attic Is the Big One

Attic insulation and air sealing usually give a Baton Rouge home the biggest comfort change for the money. The attic is where summer heat beats down hardest, and it is where most local homes keep the air handler and ductwork. A thin or patchy attic floor, plus the dozens of small holes cut through the ceiling over the years, lets cooled air rise out and hot attic air push in.

Seal before you insulate

Loose fill slows heat, but it does not stop air. Before we add depth, we seal the paths: top plates, plumbing and wiring holes, gaps around recessed lights and bath fans, chases for flues, and the attic hatch or pull-down stairs. Foam, caulk and fitted covers close those holes. Then the new insulation goes on top.

How deep is enough

Louisiana's 2021 code summary lists R-38 for ceilings in new homes. The Department of Energy recommends R-49 to R-60 for an attic in zone 2 with no insulation, or adding R-38 to R-49 on top of 3 to 4 inches that are already there. Blown cellulose and fiberglass reach those numbers at modest cost; we write the target R-value and the settled depth on the quote and mark depth rulers in the attic so you can check it.

Ducts are part of the attic

In most homes here, the ducts run through the attic. Leaky joints and disconnected boots feed cooled air into the attic and pull hot, humid air into the system. We look at the ductwork during the visit, and if the leaks are obvious we point them out. Some homeowners pair the attic work with duct sealing by their HVAC company; Entergy Louisiana's residential overview lists duct sealing, air sealing and attic insulation rebates under its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, so it is worth asking Entergy Solutions what applies.

Blown-in floor or sealed roof deck

There are two ways to insulate an attic. The usual one is to seal the attic floor and blow loose fill to depth; the attic stays vented and hot, but the house below is protected. The other is to spray foam under the roof deck and seal the attic, which brings the ducts and air handler into a mild space. The second costs more, but it can make sense when the equipment and ducts are in the attic or when there is a bonus room with tricky kneewalls. We price both when both fit.

Ventilation and old material

Blown-in attics need open soffit vents, so we baffle them before blowing. If the existing insulation is wet, crushed, rodent-fouled, or looks like vermiculite, we tell you before covering it. Get a free estimate

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

What is the attic insulation code in Louisiana?

Louisiana uses the 2021 IRC with the whole state treated as climate zone 2 for energy. The Insulation Institute's summary lists R-38 for ceilings in new construction.

Can you add insulation over what I have?

Usually yes, if the existing material is dry and clean. If it is wet, moldy, fouled by rodents or may be vermiculite, it should come out first.

How long does attic insulation take?

Most single-family attics are sealed and blown in a day. Sealed-attic foam jobs may take one to two days plus curing time.

Does Entergy give a rebate for attic insulation?

Entergy Louisiana's 2025 overview lists attic insulation, air sealing and duct sealing rebates under Home Performance with ENERGY STAR. Check the current amounts and rules with Entergy Solutions before you book.
