Two Foams, Two Jobs

Spray foam insulation goes on as a liquid, expands into gaps and cures in place, so it insulates and stops air in a single layer. In Baton Rouge, where humid air finds every crack in an attic or a raised floor, that air seal often matters as much as the R-value. We spray two kinds of foam, and picking between them is the first decision on any job.

Closed cell vs open cell

Open-cell foam is light and soft. It expands roughly a hundredfold, fills deep rafter bays and odd framing, and quiets sound. HomeGuide lists it at R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch. Water vapor can pass through it, and it will hold water if it gets soaked. Closed-cell foam is dense and hard, R-5 to R-7 per inch by HomeGuide's figures, and at normal thickness it slows vapor and sheds water instead of soaking it up. It also stiffens the surface it is sprayed on.

In our climate that sorts out like this: open-cell is the common pick under roof decks and in interior or above-grade walls; closed-cell is the pick for crawl spaces, rim boards, metal buildings, and anywhere that could see water from a flood or a leak.

Sealed attics

Most Baton Rouge homes have the air handler and ducts in the attic. Spraying foam under the roof deck and on the gable walls brings that equipment inside the insulated envelope. The attic stays close to house temperature instead of baking, and duct leaks stop pulling in superheated air. A sealed attic does need the soffit and ridge vents closed off and a plan for humidity, which we go over with you before work starts.

Walls and additions

Open stud bays in remodels and additions are fast to foam. Louisiana's code summary lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in climate zone 2, which open-cell reaches in a standard 2x4 cavity. Closed-cell gives more R-value per inch where wall depth is tight. Finished walls are a different job: foam can be injected in some cases, but dense-pack cellulose is often the more practical retrofit, and we will tell you which fits.

What foam does not fix

Foam is not a cure for a leak. A roof, window or plumbing leak has to be fixed first, or foam will hide the rot. Foam should not cover old knob-and-tube wiring or vermiculite until those are checked, and it should not bury termite inspection gaps. If we see any of those, you hear about it before we price the work.

Before and after

Spraying is fast; prep takes longer. We cover floors and belongings, mask what needs it and ventilate. HomeGuide's advice is to stay out of the house for at least 24 hours while foam cures. Once cured, foam does not settle, so the thickness we leave is the thickness you keep. Get a free estimate

Where Spray Foam Goes

The surfaces we foam most often, and the foam we usually choose.

Roof decks (sealed attics)

Open-cell or closed-cell under the roof sheathing so ducts and the air handler sit in conditioned air.

Gable and kneewalls

Sealing the vertical walls of the attic and the short walls beside upstairs bonus rooms.

Open wall cavities

Remodels, additions and new builds, sized to the zone 2 wall target or better.

Crawl space walls and rim boards

Closed-cell where the house meets its foundation, with termite inspection gaps kept open.

Floors over garages

Foam in the floor framing of rooms that sit over a hot, fume-filled garage.

Metal buildings

Closed-cell on steel to insulate and stop condensation drip.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

What are the pros and cons of spray foam insulation?

Pros: it air seals and insulates in one step, does not settle, and closed-cell resists water. Cons: it costs more than fiberglass or cellulose, it is hard to remove later, and it hides leaks or termite activity if those are not dealt with first.

Is open-cell foam safe in a humid attic?

Yes, when the attic is part of the conditioned space and the house's humidity is under control. The vents are closed off, and the air conditioning has to keep indoor humidity in check. We look at the system before recommending it.

Will foaming the roof deck void my shingle warranty?

Some shingle makers have rules about unvented roof assemblies. Check your shingle warranty paperwork before work, and we can tell you the foam type and thickness so you can ask the maker.

How long does spray foam last?

Cured foam does not settle or sag, so properly installed foam keeps its thickness for the life of the building unless it is damaged by water, fire or pests.
